Cookie & Storage Technologies Policy
Last reviewed: 10 September 2026. This policy explains how this Otterian website uses cookies and other technologies that store information on, or access information from, a device.
Who this policy applies to
This policy applies to the public Otterian website. A specific Otterian app or venture may provide additional information where it uses different storage or access technologies.
What storage and access technologies are
The Privacy and Electronic Communications Regulations apply to more than traditional browser cookies. They can also apply to technologies such as local or web storage, tracking pixels, scripts and tags, link-decoration techniques, device fingerprinting and similar ways of storing information on or accessing information from a phone, computer or other device.
How this website is configured
This public website is configured not to deploy advertising or behavioural-tracking technologies by default. Essential technologies may be used where necessary for security, administration, network delivery and functionality that you request.
The theme does not treat consent as a design shortcut. If optional analytics, advertising, marketing or another non-essential technology is introduced, it must be reviewed before activation and must not run until the applicable PECR condition has been met.
Current locale preference
When you deliberately select an available site locale, this website stores a first-party cookie named otterian_locale for up to 180 days so that the site can remember that choice. The cookie contains only the validated locale identifier, is HTTP-only, uses SameSite=Lax, is scoped to this site and is marked Secure when the site is served over HTTPS. It is not used by the theme for advertising or cross-service tracking.
You can change the stored locale by choosing another available locale. You can also remove the cookie using your browser or device site-data controls. The cookie is used only for the language or locale preference that you selected.
Current colour preference
When you deliberately use the light or dark mode control, this website stores the value light or dark in first-party browser local storage under the key otterian_color_mode. This preference is used only to remember the colour mode you selected for this site. It is not sent by the theme for advertising or cross-service tracking and has no theme-defined expiry date.
You can replace the stored value at any time by using the colour mode control again, or remove it using your browser or device site-data controls. If local storage is unavailable, the site continues using its configured default colour mode without requiring preference storage.
When consent may not be required
PECR contains limited exceptions where storage or access may occur without consent. These include technologies used solely to transmit a communication, technologies strictly necessary to provide a service you request, qualifying statistical technologies used solely to understand and improve the service, qualifying appearance or functionality preferences, and emergency-assistance location technologies.
The statistical and appearance exceptions have specific transparency and objection requirements. We will not label a technology essential merely because it is useful to us, and an exception will be used only where its legal conditions are actually met.
Analytics
If Otterian introduces analytics, we will classify the purpose before deployment. Privacy-preserving statistical measurement used solely to understand and improve the service may qualify for the PECR statistical-purpose exception if all conditions are satisfied, including clear information and a simple, free way to object. Analytics used to identify or track people, combine activity across services, profile users or support advertising does not fall within that exception and requires the appropriate consent or other lawful condition.
Optional technologies and consent
Where consent is required, it must be a genuine affirmative choice. Optional technologies must not be activated merely because you continued browsing, and consent for one purpose must not be treated as consent for unrelated purposes. You must be able to withdraw consent as easily as you gave it.
Managing your choices
Where this website uses optional technologies, the relevant interface will provide the choices required for those technologies. You can also use browser or device controls to remove or block storage, but blocking technologies that are strictly necessary for a requested feature may prevent that feature from working correctly.
Third-party technology
An Otterian venture may use approved third-party infrastructure, payment, app-store, support or fulfilment services. Where a third party stores or accesses information on your device, the relevant Otterian service must assess the purpose, the parties involved and the applicable PECR consent or exception requirements before deployment.
Personal information
PECR can apply even where stored or accessed information is not personal data. Where a storage or access technology does involve personal information, the UK GDPR and Data Protection Act 2018 also apply. Our Privacy Notice explains the wider data protection position.
Changes to this policy
We will update this policy and any applicable consent or objection controls before materially changing how optional storage or access technologies are used. Questions can be sent using the contact details on our Contact page.
